From the Dinner Table on Monday, June 29 – Tokyo, Japan
Continuing with my U.S. food series, although this is the final instalment.
By Monday, June 29, I had already arrived at Narita Airport on my return flight from Los Angeles. Since I was scheduled to take a connecting flight to Hiroshima the following day, I stayed at a hotel in Hamamatsucho, where the Tokyo Monorail to Haneda Airport departs.
Naturally, I ate out that evening. I ordered a set meal of grilled mackerel marinated in sweet mirin sauce, with a large serving of rice, for 1,350 yen. The fish was rich and nicely fatty, and it was very delicious.
This is the restaurant where I had the meal.
My flight to Narita was operated by ZIPAIR, a low-cost carrier affiliated with Japan Airlines. Since no complimentary in-flight meal is provided—food is sold separately, rather like refreshments on a train—I endured the nearly 12-hour return flight with only a doughnut purchased at a U.S. supermarket and a cup of “Udon de Sky” noodles bought on board.
By the time I arrived in Tokyo, I was so hungry that I could not resist ordering a large serving of rice. Please forgive me (laugh).
Today’s food expense came to 1,350 yen.
*The price includes Japan’s 8% consumption tax.
